Two-week tournament draws 23 teams as final settled on penalties at Dunoon Sports Complex

DAVID ROSSOUW

Classic FC held their nerve from the spot to lift the Dunoon LFA preseason title, edging Khaba Lento on penalties after a goalless final capped two weeks of competitive football at the Dunoon Sports Complex.

The tournament, featuring 23 teams, served as a testing ground ahead of the new season, with matches played at pace and on fine margins.

Classic FC’s route to the final was hard-earned. They edged Switch FC 1–0 in the semifinals, while Khaba Lento advanced after beating Dunoon Swallows on penalties in another tight contest.

The final followed a similar pattern. Neither side found a breakthrough in regulation time, and the contest was settled from the spot, where Classic FC showed composure to secure the title.

Dunoon LFA president Amos Siwayi said the tournament reflected the importance of discipline and structure in developing players, urging clubs to focus on performance while administration remains in place to support the game.

Minister of Labour and Employment Judith Nemadzinga-Tshabalala encouraged players to continue testing themselves against strong opposition, saying competition sharpens both skill and resilience.

For many players, the tournament offered a chance to measure progress ahead of the season, with matches marked by sharp passing, organised defending and moments of individual flair.

Beyond the results, the event drew support from across the community, reinforcing Dunoon’s standing as a centre of grassroots football.

Tournament director Sthembiso Stwayi thanked participating teams, SANCO and sponsors for backing the competition and contributing to the growth of the game.

Book Review

ANC Billionaires by Pieter du Toit

In September 1985 a group of white South African business leaders travelled to a game lodge in Zambia to meet with the exiled ANC leadership under Oliver Tambo and Thabo Mbeki.

The Zambian visit set in motion a coordinated and well-resourced plan by big business to influence political change in South Africa. Pieter du Toit investigates these secret deals, and shows how the ANC was completely unprepared to navigate the intersection between business and politics.
