Candidates flood streets and taxi rank in last push for votes

Dunoon has been plastered with election posters as the Ward 104 municipal by-election heads into its final stretch, opening a contest for representation in the City of Cape Town council.
Along the stretch of Potsdam Road from the Killarney bus terminus, running past Dunoon and connecting to Malibongwe Drive, lamp posts and power poles have been lined with campaign posters. The same pattern extends into informal settlements, signalling a tightly contested race ahead of Wednesday’s vote.
In the running are Bulelwa Mayende (ANC), Sino Dyokwe (DA), Zibonele Caji (ATM), Eric Mxeleli Mtheli (SACP) and Mabhuti Tshitiza (EFF).
For more than a week, candidates and party activists have been moving through neighbourhoods, knocking on doors and engaging residents at key points such as the Dunoon taxi rank.
The ward includes Dunoon, The Stables and the Killarney Gardens industrial area north of Milnerton. Voting will take place on Wednesday 25 March.
Electoral officials have advised that registered voters who are unable to vote on the day can apply for a special vote. Special voting is scheduled for Tuesday 24 March between 8am and 5pm, with applications required ahead of the deadline.
Voters must present a green barcoded ID book, smart ID card or a valid temporary identification certificate.
With voting day approaching, the surge in posters and campaigning reflects a closely fought contest in one of the city’s closely watched wards.
