A High School teenager has been crowned Miss Dunoon while a 23-year-old man took the Mr. Dunoon title at the Mr. and Miss Dunoon beauty pageant on Saturday 25 March at Sophakama primary school.
The pageant theme ‘taking back our pride by shining our light’ and several organisations from within and outside Dunoon teamed up to host the event, hosted for the first time.
Idwalalethu Foundation, Gwadiso Foundation, Our Pride Rebirth Foundation, and Mondreki Fashion Design Foundation and Vukani Makhosikazi collaborated to host the event in which 22 young people participated.
Event organisor Sinovuyo Willem said the purpose of the beauty pageant was to promote confidence in young people in Dunoon, and also provide opportunities and personal development in creative arts.
16-year-old Zibanzi Dyantyi who is in grade 11 at Sinenjogo High School in Joe Slovo Park, Milnerton, was crowned Miss Dunoon, while Davidson Johnson, 23, emerged with the Mr Dunoon crown.
“I was nervous at first but when I saw my friends as part of the audience everything just became easy. Every time I got nervous, I just looked at them and smiled even more,” said Dyantyi. “When they called my name to be crowned as Miss Dunoon 2023, I was full of joy. I’m just surprised I didn’t cry. I’m super happy to be part of change in my community. I am a queen of my own body,” she said.
Johnson said it was his first time he’d competed in a beauty pageant, but he was confident he’d take the title.
Reigning Miss Bikini Cape Town Public Choice 2022 Ntombovuyo ‘Ntosh’ Ngomana was the coach for the female participants. Ngomana said she was excited that they performed with confidence.
