Forced to be resourceful while growing up in Samora Machel township, 24-year-old Mkhanyiseli Landu honed his entrepreneurial spirit to launch his own clothing brand, S2PHA.
Having matriculated from Sophumelela High School in 2018 where he demonstrated his leadership skills by serving as a prefect, he found a talent for event planning and a passion for fashion, showcasing his creativity and flair for style at every opportunity.
“I had a vision for a clothing brand, but I was unsure about the steps to take and what was required to bring it to life,” says Landu.
But the challenges of growing up in a township fuelled Landu’s determination to succeed in the fashion industry he so loves. Aware of the obstacles and high failure rate, he was driven to pursue his dream. Although starting his own clothing brand was a difficult journey, he credits his supportive friends for helping him overcome the hurdles and stay committed to his vision.
The brand gained significant traction and popularity through social media marketing, leading to a surge in sales. Initially, the t-shirts were priced at R100, and as the brand’s popularity grew, so did its customer base.
“I came across the name S2PHA and was drawn to its unique spelling. I thought to myself, ‘This is a clever and creative name that will stand out, and only a few people will be able to read and pronounce it correctly,” he said.
He says the name S2PHA has a local flair, which he believed would resonate with the community, something rooted in people’s culture which they would appreciate and support. He says S2PHA is a Zulu word that means six in English, highlighting the brand’s connection to its heritage.
Of Landu, his longtime friend Bonani Ngamlane, said he has always been a driven and compassionate individual, dedicated to achieving his goals and helping others.
“I’ve had the pleasure of watching him grow and evolve, and I’m incredibly proud of his accomplishments. I wish him continued success and prosperity in all his endeavors,” said Ngamlane.
