Nandi Mhlongo breaks gender norms at Cape Town port

Staff Reporter

As a pioneering force in reshaping gender norms in the workplace, Nandi Mhlongo is being celebrated by Transnet as an Operator of Lifting Equipment at the Cape Town Container Terminal.

Mhlongo’s role reflects the evolving landscape of traditionally male-dominated industries.

Her career began in 2013 with a learnership programme at Transnet Port Terminals, where she earned a Container Straddle Carrier certification.

Through ship-to-shore training, Mhlongo advanced her skills and now expertly operates towering cranes and substantial equipment vital for cargo movement. Initially the sole female operator on her shift, she has since seen a growing number of women enter the field.

Reflecting on her unexpected career trajectory, Mhlongo said: “I never imagined this path, as my original goal was to become an accountant. Yet, life often guides us to our true calling.”

Although financial constraints prevented her from completing her accounting diploma, the precision and attention to detail she acquired have proven invaluable in her current role.

Mhlongo’s performance demonstrates her skill and commitment.

She consistently exceeds expectations, with her highest container moves per hour reaching 35.

Her work not only supports the South African economy but also sets a new standard for women in the industry, and illustrate the advancing opportunities for women breaking through long-standing gender barriers.

She said she was “proud to be among the top crane operators” at the Cape Town Container Terminal (CTCT).

Offering advice to women from all backgrounds, Mhlongo said: “Pursue your passion with determination, stay resolute, and do not let anyone dissuade you from reaching your goals.”
