In the recently conducted municipal by-elections on Wednesday, 19 June 2024, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has emerged victorious, retaining all its seats in the City of Cape Town – Metro and sweeping all three seats in Beaufort West previously held by the African National Congress (ANC) and the Patriotic Alliance (PA).

In the City of Cape Town – Metro, the DA retained its seats as follows:

  • Ward 64: Izabel Sherry of the DA won with 97.64% of the votes, compared to 85.10% in the 2021 Municipal Elections.
  • Ward 105: Francois Berry secured victory with 89.06% of the votes, up from 76.89% in 2021.
  • Ward 113: Susan Iris van der Linde emerged victorious with 97.96% of the votes, an increase from 84.01% in 2021.

Moving to Beaufort West, the DA won all three seats:

  • Ward 01: October Haarvoor won with 42.02% of the votes, compared to 35.90% in 2021.
  • Ward 03: Georgina Juliana Dumpies secured victory with 41.08% of the votes, down from 42.95% in 2021.
  • Ward 06: Elvico Links emerged victorious with 37.35% of the votes, up from 31.40% in 2021.

Voter turnout varied across the wards, with Cape Town seeing turnouts between 20.00% and 28.38%, while Beaufort West had turnouts ranging from 55.37% to 61.19%.

Michael Hendrickse, the IEC Provincial Electoral Officer, expressed satisfaction with the voter turnout, stating, “It augurs well for the Local Government Elections in 2026.”
