Households and businesses are bracing for more blackouts as Eskom pulls the plug, announcing the return of Stage 3 load shedding after nearly a year of uninterrupted power.
In a statement on Friday, 31 January, the power utility’s spokesperson, Kyle Cookson, admitted that Eskom—once trumpeting the triumph of its Generation Recovery Plan—is now backpedaling, blaming a “temporary setback” for the latest round of crippling outages.
From 17:00 on Friday until midnight on Sunday, South Africans will once again be plunged into chaos, scrambling for candles, dusting off generators, and praying for a miracle as the nation is dragged back into the dark ages by relentless rolling blackouts.
Cookson stated an update is coming on Sunday, February 2.
