Police investigate shooting following threat

A business in Witsand, Atlantis, was struck by gunfire days after receiving a handwritten note warning of violence if payment was not made.
The note, written in pen on a torn sheet of paper, states: “This is the last warning… If you don’t pay we kill,” and lists a cellphone number described as a “protection” contact.
Bullet holes punctured a glass door at the premises, cracking the pane, while another round drove through an interior wall, indicating that at least one shot passed through the building.
The shooting occurred on Friday 24 April.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said on Monday 28 April that Atlantis police are investigating a case of discharging of a firearm in a municipal area.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrests have been made,” said Twigg.
Police are also aware of reports of alleged extortion activity in parts of Cape Town.
“All such allegations are treated with the utmost seriousness,” he said, adding that investigations are underway to determine whether there are links to organised criminal activity.
