To recognise and celebrate female drivers working in a traditionally male-dominated industry, MyCiTi bus Vehicle Operating Company, Kidrogen, treated its 40 female drivers to a luncheon on Thursday, 8 August, 2024.
This Women’s Month event highlighted the dedication and precision these women bring to steering MyCiTi buses for Kidrogen, honouring their vital contributions on the job.
Kidrogen’s Chief Executive Officer, Andile Peter, says the company is committed to empowerment and equality.
Peter stated that Kidrogen has taken a bold step by employing women drivers in an industry long dominated by men.
“Half of these women were previously employed as general workers, now trained and driving, showing that when women are given opportunities, they excel,” said Peter.
Looking ahead, he revealed Kidrogen’s ambitious 2030 strategy, aimed at ensuring that 90% of the company’s drivers will be women, recognising the vital role women play in the growth and development of the transport sector.
“These women face the daily challenge of safely transporting commuters, a responsibility they take on with skill and commitment,” he stated.
He said the company acknowledges the excellence demonstrated by its female drivers, with many outperforming their male counterparts in both driving abilities and conduct.
He said the luncheon was a tribute to their dedication, celebrating not only their work but also their resilience and contribution to the success of the transport industry.
