The 22nd edition of the Engen Knockout Challenge (EKOC) for under-18 boys and under-20 women showcased its ability to unite people beyond language and culture when it kicked off at the Erica Park Sports Grounds on Friday, 7 June.
The competition reached its conclusion on Sunday, 9 June, with exceptional displays of football skills by the participating boys and women at the Belhar grounds. Hosted by four distinct regions of the South African Football Association (SAFA), the event has identified the initial qualifiers for the national tournament: Cape Town Roses representing the women’s category and Stellenbosch FC representing the boys’ division.
These teams will represent SAFA Cape Town in the upcoming Johannesburg tournament, where they will compete against formidable opponents from the Gqeberha, Durban, and Johannesburg.
In the women’s competition, Cape Town Roses demonstrated supremacy by defeating Dangerous Heroes with a commanding 5-0 victory, securing their consecutive championship title. This triumph underscores Roses’ dominance in the women’s football arena in Cape Town.
Similarly, Stellenbosch FC clinched victory in the boys’ category for the second consecutive year, securing their position in the national event. Despite a challenging start with a goalless draw against Hellenic FC on the first day, Stellenbosch FC exhibited resilience by securing a 3-0 victory against Eyethu FC, and a 4-0 win against FN Rangers FC, advancing to the quarter-finals.
Following a hard-fought quarter-final match against Rebels FC that culminated in a 0-0 draw, Stellenbosch emerged triumphant in a penalty shootout, prevailing 5-3, and progressed to the semi-finals. Their journey to the final included a narrow 1-0 victory over Ubuntu Academy, setting the stage for a title clash against Cape Town City.
The final encounter showcased a fierce battle between both teams, with remarkable displays of skill and determination. Goalless after regulation time, the intense competition extended into a penalty shootout. Stellenbosch’s goalkeeper, Nathan Langeveldt, displayed exceptional saves, thwarting two crucial penalty kicks and securing Stellenbosch’s championship title.
Real Brazilians from Dunoon embraced an opportunity to compete following another team’s withdrawal. Although they faced defeat against the runners-up, Dangerous Heroes, in the quarter-finals, the experience served as a valuable learning curve for the team, as noted by Coach Andile Mqaleleo.
SAFA Cape Town and Engen conveyed their gratitude to the fans, teams, and media for their unwavering support throughout the competition, acknowledging their significant contributions to the success of the Engen Knockout Challenge Cup in Cape Town. In the absence of President Danny Jordaan, Bennett Bailey, SAFA Cape Town President and SAFA National Vice President, highlighted the media’s immense role in the 22nd edition of the Engen Series.
The Engen Knockout Challenge not only showcased the exceptional talent of young athletes but also fostered community cohesion and sportsmanship.
Looking ahead, the anticipation for the national event in Johannesburg is palpable. Both Cape Town Roses and Stellenbosch FC have set high standards and will undoubtedly strive to leave a mark on the national stage. Their performances in Cape Town have already inspired numerous young athletes to aspire to greatness and pursue their goals with zeal and determination.
As we reflect on the enthralling matches and unforgettable moments from this year’s EKOC, it is evident the future of South African football is bright. The skills, resilience, and sportsmanship exhibited by these young athletes promise a promising future. The journey to Johannesburg marks just the beginning of their exciting careers, and we eagerly wait to support them as they represent Cape Town with pride.
